Acting Out: Day 8 — Flogged For Your Faith

Read Acts 5:21-42

Key Verse: Acts 5:42 “And every day, in the Temple and in their homes, they continued to teach and to preach this message: ‘The Messiah you are looking for is Jesus.” (NLT)

Imagine being accused of the crime that the disciples were accused of. Verse 28 says that instead of being quiet and not talking about Jesus anymore, the disciples had filled the whole city of Jerusalem with their teaching about Jesus. Wouldn’t you love to be able to see the day when it could said about you and your friends that you had filled your entire community with your teaching about Jesus.

Once again the disciples were arrested and this time they were flogged for their faith in Jesus. That basically means that they were whipped and beat up. That would be pretty discouraging wouldn’t it? But look how the disciples reacted. Verse 41 tells us that they left their flogging rejoicing or celebrating that God allowed them to suffer for Jesus’ name sake.

Jesus had suffered so much for them when he was crucified that the believers viewed their own sufferings as an honor. Just to be able to suffer for Jesus as He did for them made the disciples very glad. Whenever you are made fun of or picked on for your faith in Jesus will you hide away and feel sorry for yourself or will you celebrate the fact that God counted you worthy to suffer for Jesus’ name?

Prayer: “Lord, help me to view any suffering I face because of my faith in you as an honor. Find me worthy to suffer for you as you suffered for me.”
